Self surgery by Russian Doctor

Leonid Ivanovich Rogozov, a Russian doctor who performed a self-appendectomy while stationed in Antarctica in 1961.

Rogozov was part of a Soviet expedition to Antarctica when he began experiencing symptoms of acute appendicitis. Due to the harsh conditions and the difficulty of evacuating him from the station, Rogozov made the decision to perform the surgery on himself with the assistance of his fellow expedition members.

Using local anesthesia and a mirror to guide his incisions, Rogozov successfully removed his appendix in a two-hour operation. He made a full recovery and returned to work shortly thereafter.

Rogozov's story has become well-known as an example of extreme medical self-sufficiency and determination in the face of adversity.
