Leaked Military Document Reveals Russian Fighter Jet Nearly Shot Down British Surveillance Plane, Risking Escalation of Ukraine Conflict"

Last year, an incident occurred that could have potentially led the United States and its NATO allies directly into the ongoing Ukraine conflict. It was discovered that a Russian fighter jet nearly shot down a British surveillance plane on September 29 off the coast of Crimea, the heavily fortified Ukrainian peninsula that Russia seized in 2014 and has since used as a base for its Black Sea naval fleet and to launch attacks elsewhere in Ukraine.

The leaked classified Pentagon document, one of many in a trove of leaked documents that has triggered a Justice Department investigation, has shed light on the previously undisclosed event. The document refers to the incident as a "near-shoot down of UK RJ," where "RJ" is the commonly used nickname for RC-135 reconnaissance planes that are used to collect electronic messages and radio transmissions.

The incident was first publicly disclosed by the British Defense Minister Ben Wallace, who announced it to the House of Commons in October. According to Wallace, two Russian Su-27 fighter jets recklessly intercepted the RC-135 in international airspace over the Black Sea, with one of the planes getting as close as 15 feet to the British aircraft. The incident caused a diplomatic row between the United Kingdom and Russia, with the former accusing the latter of "dangerous and unprofessional behavior."

The leaked document has raised concerns about the level of tension between Russia and the Western world, particularly NATO, and highlights the risks of such incidents escalating into full-blown military conflicts. It has also exposed the U.S. military's surveillance operations in the region, further straining the already tense relationship between the United States and Russia.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been a source of tension between Russia and the Western world since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. The situation has been further complicated by allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which has strained the relationship between the United States and Russia even further. The near miss of the British surveillance plane by the Russian fighter jet serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions and risks in the region.
